Yellow Then Blue is an exploratory musical project by multi-instrumentalist/composer Justin Deming. Various musical styles from Justin’s history are represented and melded together to create alchemy of experimental sound. These diverse tastes include experimental electronic, drum and bass, punk rock, prog rock, jazz, and ambient styles. “Guitar was the first instrument that I felt a strong connection to. I played and listened to a lot of punk rock music when I was a kid. Later, I matured into prog rock and then later jazz. With jazz though I decided I should put all of my energy into the saxophone. Learning the flute came later as a result of all that. Classical piano was my first instrument actually. Over time the name Yellow Then Blue came to represent this duality that I kept noticing. Originally I picked this name because a friend of mine with synesthesia described my music as being cool because it was yellow and then blue. Now it seems even more appropriate as a title seeing as those colors are opposites in the spectrum.”
While attending music school at USC, Justin played in their top jazz ensemble, the Thornton Jazz Orchestra, and had the pleasure of playing with many great jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Patti Austin, The Wayne Shorter Band, Randy Newman, and played in a big band led by Quincy Jones for a Sinatra family event. After graduation Justin became a studio musician in Los Angeles, playing on lots of rock albums, student films, TV commercials, as well as getting to perform at The House Of Blues on the Sunset strip where he proudly wrote his name on the wall back stage. Eventually he ventured into the world of commercial writing for TV shows. Justin has written music for the A&E reality drama "The First 48" as well as “Uncertainty”, the new film by David Siegel and Scott McGehee. You can also find his music being placed on the NBC show "Poker After Dark", on The CW for Smallville, The Game, Privileged, Supernatural, Everybody Hates Chris, 13 – Fear is Real, and in the movie trailer for Into The Blue 2. Recently Justin has received the 2009 BMI Music Award for the Highest Ranking Television Cable Program, "The First 48" on A&E (through Duotone Audio/Pete Nashel). His music is also licensed through "Downright Music" in Santa Monica. Justin also does mixing and mastering work for other bands and jazz musicians and has done Drum and Bass remix work for prominent young jazz musicians.
